Al received his A.B.
degree the University of California, Berkeley (1965 – Free Speech Movement), his
lifetime teaching credential (secondary) from California State University,
Hayward and his J.D. degree from San Francisco Law School.
Al was admitted to the California State Bar in 1971.
Al served as a teacher and administrator in the San Lorenzo Unified School
District from 1967 - 1975.
Al has been in private law practice since 1971, with offices in three different
counties in California. Al has served as a founding Director of Granite
Community Bank and Mt. Diablo National Bank.A member of the Rotary Club of
Granite Bay Ca. and a past President of the Rotary Club of San Ramon, Al’s
Rotary involvement includes his year of service as Governor of District 5160
(1993-94).
He is recognized as a trainer of other Rotary leaders. He has trained Presidents
at P.E.T.S. and has trained Governors at G.N.A.T.S. and G.E.T.S. Al has twice
served as a Group Discussion Leader at the annual training of Governors in
Anaheim.
Al has served as Representative of the President of Rotary International (18
times) and Al has been a presenter/speaker at all levels - club, District, Zone
and International, including District assemblies, P.E.T.S. and International
Institutes and Conventions and in 4 countries (India, Peru, Mexico, Canada) as
well as in fourteen of our fifty states
Al was awarded the Citation for Meritorious Service in 2000 and Al has been
named as the most Distinguished Past District Governor for Zone 23 in the year
2001-2. In 2008, Al received TRF’s highest honor – The Distinguished Service
Award.
Al recently received special achievement award from World TRF Chair, Luis Giay,
for Al’s leadership in raising 14 million dollars for TRF.
For the years 2008-11, Al is serving as the Zone 23 Polio Plus Challenge
Coordinator.
Al has delivered wheelchairs in Peru, immunized children in India and worked
with children in Mexico.
Al’s wife and partner, Cristie Akers, is Past President of the Rotary Club of
Granite Bay, CA. and is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Big Fork, Montana
and has served three years as an assistant Governor and two years as her
District’s Annual Giving chair. She has chaired her District’s Foundation
Dinners, raising over 2 million dollars. She is a Paul Harris Fellow (2 sapphire
level), a member of the Paul Harris Society, and a Member of the Bequest Society
(Level One).
Al is a Paul Harris Fellow (Major Donor) and Bequest Society Member (4 Diamond
Level) as is his daughter, Debi.
